In a tragic incident, around 40 people have lost their lives and more than 50 have been injured in a stampede that occurred during a political rally organized by Superstar actor Vijay’s TVK party in Karur district of Tamil Nadu. Among the deceased, reports confirm the deaths of 16 women and 10 children.

This devastating incident took place yesterday, i.e., on 26th September at around 7:30 PM.

Political Leaders Across India Express Grief and Condolences

The entire nation, including Tamil Nadu, is mourning the tragedy. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, Chief Ministers of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, Priyanka Gandhi, and several other prominent leaders have expressed their deep condolences. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also speaks to Tamil Nadu Governor and CM to assure all possible Central help.

CM Stalin, PM Modi, and TVK Announce Ex-Gratia for Victims

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin visited the Karur district hospital, met the families of the deceased and injured, and expressed his condolences. He announced an ex-gratia assistance of Rs. 10 lakh for the families of the deceased. Similarly, actor Vijay’s political party (TVK) has announced Rs. 20 lakh compensation for the families of those who lost their lives. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has announced an assistance amount of Rs. 2 lakh each.

Following the incident, several top political leaders are expected to visit Karur district.

As public outrage grows over the incident, actor Vijay has returned to his residence, which is now under tight security.

Retired Justice Aruna Jagadeesan to Lead Independent Investigation:

Chief Minister MK Stalin has ordered a detailed investigation, while Karur district police have filed FIRs against various TVS party officials in connection with the mishap. An inquiry Commission headed by retired High Court Judge Justice Aruna Jagadeesan will be investigate the sad incident. Tamil Nadu’s Acting DGP G. Venkataraman stated that TVS rallies usually attract smaller crowds, but this time, while the expected attendance was around 10,000 people, nearly 27,000 people had shown up. Around 500 police personnel were deployed at the venue.

The incident site still has scattered footwear, clothes, and various belongings left behind by the victims. According to available information, the TVS party has approached the Madras High Court, claiming this was part of a conspiracy against the party.

In recent times, such stampede incidents have been increasing, but the lack of adequate precautionary measures by the government and various political parties has sparked growing public anger. A similar tragic stampede occurred in Bengaluru during the RCB IPL champion celebration not long ago, but no lessons seem to have been learned from that event. This latest incident once again points to administrative negligence.

Thank You.
