Ashwin slams fake retirement news with a bold response! Get the real story behind the viral rumors.
Legendary spin bowler R. Ashwin recently put an end to a major rumor during an interview. During the last Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Ashwin shocked everyone by suddenly announcing his retirement from Test cricket. At the time, there was widespread discussion surrounding his decision. Some cricket experts and fans speculated that Ashwin didn’t retire on his own but was pressured into it. There were also rumors suggesting that he had been dropped from the playing XI and was thus indirectly forced to retire. Many people blamed the team management for this decision.
Ashwin Reaction:
However, Ashwin has now cleared the air and put all such speculations and false accusations to rest. In a recent interview, Ashwin made it absolutely clear that his decision to retire was entirely personal. “No one told me that I don’t have a place in the team and that I should leave,” he stated. In fact, 2–3 people even asked him to reconsider the decision. Both Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir reportedly advised him to think again before finalizing his retirement. However, Ashwin mentioned that he could not even have a discussion with Ajit Agarkar (chief selector) about it, and emphasized, “This was completely my personal decision.”
In the same interview, Ashwin also made another strong statement that both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma should play in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He explained that selectors asking them to play domestic matches like this will help assess their readiness for international cricket.
What becomes evident from Ashwin's statement is that his retirement was solely his own decision. All the theories and rumors spread earlier alleging conspiracies behind his retirement have now been proven false by his own words.
In light of this, people on social media must take responsibility. Many users spread baseless rumors and fabricate stories either for attention, to increase their views, or to vent personal frustrations. Young cricket fans, especially Gen-Z, must stay alert and avoid falling into the trap of such misinformation.
Recently, after the squad announcement for the upcoming ODI series against Australia, another wave of rumors flooded social media. These often lead fans to express unnecessary hate toward players and selectors. In a cricket-crazy country like India, criticism is natural, but it should always remain within limits. Sometimes the criticism becomes so extreme that it’s hard to describe.
Even former cricketers are not spared. For example, ex-cricketer and former chief selector Krishnamachari Srikkanth’s harsh criticism of Harshit Rana's selection was quite disappointing. What kind of message are we sending to the new generation of cricketers with such comments?
We are not saying Harshit Rana's selection is absolutely right or wrong but criticism can always be made in a better and more constructive manner, something that Srikkanth failed to do.
