51,593 Fans, 1 Win: KKR’s Emotional Yet Disappointing
IPL 2026 Journey!
The
first phase of Kolkata Knight Riders’ campaign in IPL 2026 has already
concluded. By ‘first phase’ we mean that the team has completed half of its
league journey, 7 matches out of 14. Speaking about their performance so far,
the team has been extremely disappointing. Naturally, the fans are the most
disheartened, and rightly so. Fans are the greatest strength of any franchise
when it comes to popularity, and KKR too has a loyal fan base comparable to
teams like CSK, MI, and RCB. If such performances continue and the management
remains inactive, KKR’s situation could deteriorate even further in the future.
Today, let us discuss KKR’s performance in the first phase along with some
other important issues related to the team.
KKR’s Nightmare Start: Just 1 Win in 7
Matches
Talking about performance, KKR has managed to
win only 1 match out of the 7 played so far. In yesterday’s match, KKR
succeeded in defeating Rajasthan Royals by 4 wickets. However, even in that
match, there came a moment when KKR’s batting once again collapsed, and the
team had already lost 6 major wickets at a score of 85. At that point, KKR
needed 71 runs from 39 balls to win. At the crease were Rinku Singh, who has
been struggling for form, and Anukul Roy, who has never delivered anything
particularly significant with the bat for KKR. By then, Rinku had also been
given a lifeline after an easy catch was dropped. The pitch was slightly slow
and offered good assistance to spinners. Under such conditions, KKR’s chances
of winning were extremely low. However, both Rinku and Anukul batted with great
composure and intelligence, successfully guiding the team to its first win
after six matches. One of KKR’s matches was abandoned due to rain, resulting in
both KKR and Punjab receiving one point each. In the remaining five matches,
KKR had to face defeat.
KKR’s Biggest Problem: Flawed
Management Decisions
As mentioned earlier in one of our previous
articles, KKR’s biggest problem lies in its management. The team keeps
repeating the same mistakes again and again, yet it appears that the management
remains unaffected. During matches, certain decisions are made that make it
seem like even a district level club team might take better calls than KKR. The
team certainly has talented players, but as we always say, the hallmark of a
good coach and captain is how well they understand their players and extract
performance from them. We do not know who made the decision to appoint Abhishek
Nayar as coach and reinstate Ajinkya Rahane as captain. However, we hope that whoever
made this decision realizes their mistake. We have no personal issues with
either Abhishek Nayar or Ajinkya Rahane. In fact, we have always highly appreciated Abhishek
Nayar as a batting coach. As for Ajinkya Rahane, his batting performance for KKR has
been decent, but we feel he is not the right fit for captaincy. Even last year,
his performance as captain was not impressive, yet the management continued to
show faith in him, and so far, he has disappointed. The decisions made by both
the coach and captain, as well as team selection, have been very average.
Tactical Failures
There is no doubt that KKR’s bowling department has suffered due to injuries to some of their first choice players, which has had a significant impact on results. However, consider this, what kind of decision is it when the pitch is clearly assisting spinners, yet you do not allow your left-arm spinner to bowl at all? The captain justified it by saying that left-handed batsmen were at the crease for the opposition. Is that really a valid reason? On flat tracks, such decisions might be somewhat understandable, but on a pitch offering turn, using left-hand/right-hand combinations as an excuse reflects poor thinking. This is certainly not the sign of a good captain or coach. In fact, Jadeja himself delivered an excellent bowling performance on the same pitch against KKR’s left-handed batsmen. Fortunately, Rinku’s catch was dropped, otherwise KKR might have faced yet another defeat. If we talk about batting, if you do not want to send Sunil Narine as an opener, then at least utilize him against spinners. At the death overs, Narine has never been particularly effective against pace bowlers. Such a simple observation if not understood by the management, coach or captain raises serious concerns. There have been numerous such incidents and questionable decisions by KKR management; if we were to list them all, this would easily become a 4-5 page article.
Eden Gardens Turns Loyal: 51,593 Fans
Show Unmatched Loyalty
Yesterday, KKR played
against Rajasthan Royals at their home ground, Eden Gardens, on an extremely
hot day. Despite the team’s poor form, around 52,000 fans showed up at the
stadium to support KKR, ignoring the intense heat. Very few teams in the world
enjoy such loyal support, especially when they are struggling. On social media,
some people troll KKR’s legacy. These loyal fans chose this very day to respond
to those critics in a way no one expected. The team is at a low point,
suffering consecutive losses, and nothing seems to be going right yet these
fans turned up in massive numbers to support them. It was somewhat
disappointing that some prominent cricket journalists and commentators did not
highlight this aspect. However, we cannot criticize them, as it is their
personal choice. Nevertheless, this was a powerful statement not only for those
questioning KKR’s legacy but also for the management. The management must
understand that fans cannot be taken for granted. These people came to the
stadium under scorching heat to support the team. The team in turn also has a
responsibility towards its fans. Fans understand that winning and losing are
part of the game. But their emotions cannot be ignored repeatedly. We are not
suggesting that management must implement every fan suggestions, but such low standard
decisions are unacceptable when you are handling a team like KKR, a three time
champion franchise.
Conclusion
We hope that in the
coming days, KKR management will take these matters seriously and that the team
will perform better in the second phase, the remaining 7 matches. This would
not only bring some joy back to the hearts of KKR fans but also make the 51,593
fans who were present in the scorching heat on Sunday feel proud that they
stood by a three-time champion team and will continue to do so in the future.
Thank You.
