Cyclone threat looms over Odisha as low pressure forms in Bay of Bengal. IMD predicts rain, farmers stay alert.

According to the latest reports, a low-pressure area has formed over the Bay of Bengal. This system has developed under the influence of an active cyclonic circulation. There is a high possibility that this low-pressure area may intensify into a depression within the next 36 hours. As a result, rainfall is likely to begin in the state starting today. However, the extent of its impact on Odisha and which specific districts will be most affected has not yet been clarified by the Meteorological Department.

Possibility of Cyclone:

On the other hand, the American model ‘Global Forecast System (GFS)’ has indicated the possibility of a cyclone in the Bay of Bengal by the end of October. However, they too have not yet been able to predict the cyclone's movement accurately. Hearing news of a possible cyclone, it is natural for the people of Odisha to feel concerned, especially since a devastating super cyclone had struck Odisha around the end of October nearly 26 years ago. Initially, GFS predicted that this cyclone would not pose any threat to Odisha, but if its direction changes, there could be an impact. However, as of now, no further assessment has been made.

Weather expert Shri Surendranath Pasupalak stated that after the withdrawal of the monsoon, atmospheric conditions are favorable for cyclone formation, making it difficult to completely rule out the possibility of a cyclone. The Director General of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Mr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, has clarified that IMD has not yet made any prediction regarding a cyclone.

Possible Rain in Odisha :

As per the weather department's forecast, Odisha is unlikely to get any relief from rain for the next 5 to 7 days. Light to moderate rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds, is expected across coastal and interior districts. On the 22nd and 23rd of October, there is a strong possibility of rainfall in coastal and southern interior districts. Rainfall may intensify by the evening of the 24th. However, IMD has not made any cyclone-related predictions as of now, and the Regional Meteorological Centre has advised there is no reason for panic.

According to weather scientist Mr. Sharat Sahu, three low-pressure systems are expected to form. One of them has already formed but has not intensified significantly. The system expected to form around the 26th of October is likely to intensify further and have a greater impact. Another low-pressure system is expected to form around the 29th. However, IMD has not provided any clear information regarding these three systems.

So far, since there has been no definitive information about a cyclone, the exact impact and which districts might be affected remain unclear. This uncertainty has left Odisha’s farmers worried and anxious. Revenue Minister Shri Suresh Pujari has assured that the state government is fully prepared for any eventuality. All district administrations have also been instructed to remain fully prepared, as per directives issued by the state government.

Thank You.
