According to the sources of Jagran News' well-known sports journalist Abhishek Tripathy, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly planning for a leadership transition across formats, with Shreyas Iyer emerging as a strong contender to take over the reins of the Indian ODI team after Rohit Sharma. A final decision, however, hinges on Rohit’s future plans, which are expected to be clarified post the upcoming Asia Cup.
In a bid to manage player workload and ensure long-term stability, the BCCI is considering the idea of moving forward with two captains for the three international formats. With Suryakumar Yadav currently leading the T20 side, the plan is to hand over the T20 captaincy to young opener Shubman Gill in the near future.
Recognizing the challenges of having a single captain across all formats, especially in today’s demanding cricketing calendar, the Indian team management is looking to distribute responsibilities more strategically. A meeting is scheduled after the Asia Cup to deliberate on the future of the ODI team and the possible transition in leadership.
The timing of Iyer’s appointment as ODI captain will largely depend on Rohit Sharma’s decision regarding his white-ball future. However, within the management circle, there is a growing belief that both Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill possess the leadership qualities and temperament needed to guide Indian cricket into its next era.
If plans proceed as expected, Indian cricket could soon see a new leadership structure — with Iyer and Gill at the helm — signaling a fresh chapter in the post-Rohit-Virat era.
Meanwhile, the BCCI has extended Ajit Agarkar’s tenure by one year. Agarkar is currently the Chief Selector of Team India. After Shreyas Iyer was not included in the squad for the Asia Cup, cricket fans have expressed strong displeasure towards Agarkar and the BCCI.
